We all need a reminder every once in a while about the power of nature. Here are some tips for earthquake preparedness that would help in event of the big one. Keep an emergency supply kit. The kit should include: water, flashlights, batteries, first aid kit, a supply of non-perishable food and a battery operated radio. For those taking medications, try to arrange to always have a supply on hand. Earthquakes are not like hurricanes or tornados, you can't see them coming. You need to have your emergency supplies on hand all the time, plus you need to make sure that the food and water supplies are updated periodically so they are not out of date. They have the school kids practice duck and cover. If you have kids at home or any family for that matter, have you discussed with them the safest place to be in your house? Is it an arch way, in a door way, or do you need to just get outside if possible. After the earthquake where are you going to meet? This is very important, finding your family can be a stressful situation. If it is a big quake, emergency services are going to be very busy and it will be up to each of us to have a plan on finding each other. If you have a meeting point at least everyone knows where to go. Here in Paso Robles we have seen the effects of a large quake and have experienced the loss of life and property and while we hope to never experience it again, The odds are against our area never having another large quake. So, Paso Robles and the rest of the state need to stay prepared to protect ourselves and be able to help our neighbors if necessary. We at Ted Hamm Insurance take earthquakes seriously and hope you will as well.
