San Luis Obispo County Crop Insurance News


Well it is now officail the freeze of April 8-9, 2011 was a disaster. The USDA has designated San Luis Obispo County  in Californai as a primary natural disaster area due to losses to wine grapes. The freeze caused an extreme reduction in the wine grape crop. This announcement also has the effect of adding counties adjoining San Luis Obispo county, such as Santa Barabra County.

All qualified growers in the county could be eligible for low interest emergency (EM) loans from USDA'a Farm Service Agency (FSA). Farmers in eligible counties have eigth (8) months from the date of the declaration to apply for loans.

USDA also has made other programs available to assist growers including the SURE program; The emergency conservation Program. Please contact the Farm Service Agency for more details. Additiona information is also available online at http://disaster.fsa.usda.gov.

For those growers that carry multi-peril crop insurance, The SURE can be in addition to any payments received from the Crop insurance policy. The crop insurance will be paying in two ways, The crop loss that is covered by the policy and the fact crop insurance is necessary to be in the SURE program.
