Health Insurance for the Hard to Insure!

It may be the best kept secret in the state of California. Helath insurance specifically for theose with pre-existing conditions. If you have been turned down for health insurance  this might be the answer to obtaining health insurance.

The program is called PCIP California Pre-existing Condition Insurance Plan. Conditions apply of course, the major one being you can not have had health insurance in the past six months. You most be be a United States citizen or lawfully present as well. The premiums  are usually less than the old Major Risk Program known as MRMIP.

The details of the coverage are in their brochure but highlites are as follows:

$1500 deductible

Brand name drug deductible of $500

Annual out of pocket is $2500 with no lifetime maximum

They have a preferred provider network and once again no pre-existing condition exclusion

What else is known about this program is that currently there are only about 600 enrollees in the state. What's unclear is why this program has not taken a bigger lead in helping the uninsured. Part of the problem is most likely that it is a new program, but looking at the prices and the coverage it is as fair a program as we will find.

The application is available directly from the PCIP or from eligible agents. Eligible agents must succesfully complete a training in the program and be liscenced in the state.
